BBLS Wins Mixed 13/14/15/16/17/18 Fly to Take Meet Against Lake Lucerne

BBLS swimmers hopped back in the water last Thursday for their first meet of the season–– against Lake Lucerne–– and clearly, the pandemic hasn’t slowed any of them down! The evening kicked off with three heats of Guppies, who took the pool by storm with their steadfast determination and pink floaties (and, of course, cuteness), before transitioning to the relays and four main strokes: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle. For those unfamiliar, kids 12 & Under will swim a 25 of their assigned stroke (one length of the pool), while those 13 & Older will swim a 50 (an entire lap). Meets are divided into four age groups, which are then divided again by gender: 10 & Under, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-18.

Err, most of the time…

After Ralph hopped into the pool to swim the Boys 13-14 Fly, only to have no competition, coaches decided to spice things up by combining events to form the Boys AND Girls 13-18 Fly. Leilah Shafer took overall gold in the event, while Ralph still won for his age group.

Overall, team spirits were high Thursday night, with BBLS swimmers psyched to be back in the pool after two years away, and that energy carried into the Stingrays’ first win of the season. But the greatest part of the meet wasn’t taking first place. As Molly Bochenek, who participated in the Girls 15-18 Fly, Back, and Free said, “It was great to be back with all of the Stingrays and to see the neighborhood again!”

Hopefully, we’ll be seeing much more of the neighborhood swimmers as BBLS enters its second week of the season, with an away meet against Solon on Tuesday and a home meet against Barrington on Thursday.
